SUMMARY:Hive Geometrix
DESCRIPTION:Paintings by Stephen Livingstone \n\n\n\n\n\nBeehives are places of mystery and magic. Even beekeepers\, who over many centuries have developed an intimate\, symbiotic relationship with honeybees\, can never properly understand the complex inner-workings of their hives. \n\n\n\nThe paintings in this exhibition are a visualisation of the inside of a working beehive\, an attempt to represent the activities of the queens\, workers and drones throughout a ‘bee year’. They portray\, in symbolic form\, the bee’s political and social activities and their often desperate efforts to survive\, aided and abetted by the interventions of their human guardians. The paintings are cutaways\, architectural diagrams of the interior structures of a beehive\, each panel representing a particular part of the hive\, the colours selected and layered in order to evoke the light and scent sensing experiences of the bees. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition has been made in collaboration with Penrith Beekeepers Association and is supported by Arts Council England. \n\n\n\nStephen Livingstone is a visual artist who is based in Durham. His work deals with human impact upon landscapes and habitats and often involves collaboration with museums and archives\, academic institutions and individuals with specialist knowledge and skills. He has developed major projects for the British Library\, the National Trust\, Durham University and the Museum of Art and Design in New York. \n\n\n\n\nSpring Bloom\n\n\n\nAbandoned Hive – detail\n\n\n\nWinter Brood\n\n\n\nBrace Comb\n\n\n\nHeather Honey – detail

SUMMARY:From Xian\, China to Upfront\, Penrith!
DESCRIPTION:Original Chinese Paintings by Milly (Mrs Shang Chaofeng)\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition of Milly’s work has been brought to us by John Keith\, local art collector\, who is an Upfront Gallery supporter and introduced us to Milly’s work a few years ago. He dubbed Chaofeng ( Milly\, in English)\, “The Chinese Modigliani”. She was unaware who Modigliani was until he sent her a book of Modigliani images. Not speaking Mandarin\, John solved how to communicate with Milly. During the past 5 years Milly’s art has continued to develop\, and John has worked out how to buy\, pay for and get delivery of her work.Largely self-taught\, Milly’s work features almost entirely women\, in social meetings\, or a mum with children. They are all set in a stylish period China\, many with cats. Each work is totally original and she works daily\, unless she is in her small gallery in the Art Quarter of Xian\, the Chinese city famous for the Terracotta Warriors. \n\n\n\nAll paintings are for sale at £299. Framed in England using non-reflective glass. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMilly’ story in her words:“My name is Chaofeng Shang\, born on 16th Nov 1953 in Xi’an\, Shanxi. \n\n\n\nI went to Guomian Forth Factory Primary School\, and then studied in Xi’an 18’s High School. I started my first job in Xi’an Hardware and Electrical Company as a sales representative in 1970. I was then promoted to Sales Manager. \n\n\n\nIn 1996\, as a result of Chinese Structural Reform\, I was made redundant\, so I started my little gallery in Beilin\, Xi’an. This was when I started learning framing paintings\, and became very interested in painting. I then went to study Chinese Painting. \n\n\n\nMy current painting style is influenced by Chinese traditional ink painting. Painting is the love of my life and each one of my works is the reflection of my passion”.
