SUMMARY:New Horizons by Frances Winder
DESCRIPTION:A Post Lockdown Collection of Paintings by Frances Winder \n\n\n\n“I found that lockdown and the isolation and stress caused by Covid created a big problem with my art work. It paralysed me. I found myself unable to pick up a brush\, only able to sketch very locally. I was cut off from my inspiration which was usually to sketch\, explore and experience everything in a wide range of environments\, enjoying feeling free and alive to the world. I have a lovely garden and space to be in\, so I was very lucky\, but I felt trapped and too depressed to paint. This stop to my work has made me rethink what is important. I have wanted to experiment and find more meaning in my painting and other art projects. When I am painting\, I explore colour and texture\, moved by mood and atmosphere. I love walking and the Lakes area and this features in much of my work. Sea and shore\, the wide skies and fells\, as well as the weather are modifying aspects that I love. I do prefer a good storm to paint. Recently I have been more constrained and I am exploring the rich diversity of meadow lands and woodland.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrances has exhibited in the Royal Academy\, the Royal Watercolour Society at Bankside gallery\, the Lakes Artists\, as well as many times in the Cumbrian open at Up Front gallery.

SUMMARY:Hive Geometrix
DESCRIPTION:Paintings by Stephen Livingstone \n\n\n\n\n\nBeehives are places of mystery and magic. Even beekeepers\, who over many centuries have developed an intimate\, symbiotic relationship with honeybees\, can never properly understand the complex inner-workings of their hives. \n\n\n\nThe paintings in this exhibition are a visualisation of the inside of a working beehive\, an attempt to represent the activities of the queens\, workers and drones throughout a ‘bee year’. They portray\, in symbolic form\, the bee’s political and social activities and their often desperate efforts to survive\, aided and abetted by the interventions of their human guardians. The paintings are cutaways\, architectural diagrams of the interior structures of a beehive\, each panel representing a particular part of the hive\, the colours selected and layered in order to evoke the light and scent sensing experiences of the bees. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition has been made in collaboration with Penrith Beekeepers Association and is supported by Arts Council England. \n\n\n\nStephen Livingstone is a visual artist who is based in Durham. His work deals with human impact upon landscapes and habitats and often involves collaboration with museums and archives\, academic institutions and individuals with specialist knowledge and skills. He has developed major projects for the British Library\, the National Trust\, Durham University and the Museum of Art and Design in New York. \n\n\n\n\nSpring Bloom\n\n\n\nAbandoned Hive – detail\n\n\n\nWinter Brood\n\n\n\nBrace Comb\n\n\n\nHeather Honey – detail

SUMMARY:Richard Durrant : Music For Midsummer
DESCRIPTION:Friday 10th June at 8pm \n\n\n\nCritically acclaimed guitarist and composer Richard Durrant returns to Upfront as part of his popular 27-day Music for Midsummer tour 2022\n\n\n\nAt this concert Richard will play his Sussex downland inspired “The Crest The Coombe The Twitten” and the richly melodic “Book of Spells” on a concert guitar made from a 5\,000 year old English oak.You will also hear unaccompanied Bach played on a ukulele made from cedar rescued from the Oregon “Biscuit Fire”.  \n\n\n\nNow in its eighth year\, Richard’s 2022 musical pilgrimage takes him from the magnificent St Magnus Cathedral on Orkney\, through the UK to Brighton Open Air Theatre for midsummer and further concerts in Sussex and Kent. Once again\, to reduce his carbon footprint\, Richard will be travelling between venues by bicycle carrying his instruments on a trailer. To coincide with the tour a new album “The Sleep of a King” will be launched. Like much of Richard’s music this collection of original guitar solos is inspired by the landscape of the British Isles.Says Richard: “The intense joy I feel performing live can only be enhanced by sharing the stage each night with my bicycle!” \n\n\n\n“My new favourite guitarist… Richard Durrant sits completely outside the accepted genres. He has a peculiar and wonderful mind.” Tom Robinson\, BBC6 Music \n\n\n\n“Richard’s album Rewilding is beyond beautiful.”  Isabella Tree\, best selling author \n\n\n\nPlease listen and watch: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll Tickets £16.50. SUMMARY:From Xian\, China to Upfront\, Penrith!
DESCRIPTION:Original Chinese Paintings by Milly (Mrs Shang Chaofeng)\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition of Milly’s work has been brought to us by John Keith\, local art collector\, who is an Upfront Gallery supporter and introduced us to Milly’s work a few years ago. He dubbed Chaofeng ( Milly\, in English)\, “The Chinese Modigliani”. She was unaware who Modigliani was until he sent her a book of Modigliani images. Not speaking Mandarin\, John solved how to communicate with Milly. During the past 5 years Milly’s art has continued to develop\, and John has worked out how to buy\, pay for and get delivery of her work.Largely self-taught\, Milly’s work features almost entirely women\, in social meetings\, or a mum with children. They are all set in a stylish period China\, many with cats. Each work is totally original and she works daily\, unless she is in her small gallery in the Art Quarter of Xian\, the Chinese city famous for the Terracotta Warriors. \n\n\n\nAll paintings are for sale at £299. Framed in England using non-reflective glass. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMilly’ story in her words:“My name is Chaofeng Shang\, born on 16th Nov 1953 in Xi’an\, Shanxi. \n\n\n\nI went to Guomian Forth Factory Primary School\, and then studied in Xi’an 18’s High School. I started my first job in Xi’an Hardware and Electrical Company as a sales representative in 1970. I was then promoted to Sales Manager. \n\n\n\nIn 1996\, as a result of Chinese Structural Reform\, I was made redundant\, so I started my little gallery in Beilin\, Xi’an. This was when I started learning framing paintings\, and became very interested in painting. I then went to study Chinese Painting. \n\n\n\nMy current painting style is influenced by Chinese traditional ink painting. Painting is the love of my life and each one of my works is the reflection of my passion”.

SUMMARY:Pinocchio
DESCRIPTION:(every Wednesday\, Friday & Saturday\, plus Bank Holiday Monday 29th August) \n\n\n\nThe story about a puppet that comes to life and becomes a real boy is known throughout the world and staging the story using puppets is a challenge for any company. Using a mixture of long string marionettes and rod puppets\, Pinocchio is carved on stage\, comes alive and sets off on his many adventures. He performs on a marionette stage within the puppet show meeting two clowns\, Harlequin and Pulcinell; he is tricked by a cat and a fox into burying and losing his newly earned money; he flies on the back of a pigeon and he is chased and swallowed by a huge shark. Finally of course\, the magic Blue Fairy lends a hand because Pinocchio has learnt to be good and at the very end he becomes a real boy. \n\n\n\nWe recommend the show is suitable for ages 4 – 94.The production is given great energy by the specially composed music of local musician Bill Lloyd. \n\n\n\n\nWith the puppet theatre boss\n\n\n\nPinocchio’s nose grows\n\n\n\nIn the jaws of the shark\n\n\n\nPinocchio meets a dragon\n\n\n\n\n\nThe woodcutters\n\n\n\nPinocchio Meets the Cricket\n\n\n\nPinocchio springs to life\n\n\n\nThe Fox & the Cat\n\n\n\nPinocchio Flies on a Pigeon\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Adults £10\, Children £8.50\, Family (2 adults & 2 children) £33.

SUMMARY:Ben Caplan (Canada) with support from Terra Spencer (Canada)
DESCRIPTION:“Sometimes it takes a global pandemic to slow down and focus on the fundamentals. When Ben Caplan lost the opportunity to tour and create with the regular cadre of musicians that he typically works with\, he went into a tiny studio and made an achingly beautiful solo album. Caplan is now back in the UK touring a solo show full of contrasts and surprises. He’s bringing along support act Terra Spencer to share sneak peeks from their upcoming collaborative album too!”Ben CaplanBen Caplan is both the roar of the hurricane and the eye of the storm. He has an uncanny ability to channel both wild abandon and quiet introspection. His songwriting pulls from many diverse influences but both his music and his lyrics regularly draw from his Jewish heritage. Often mixing biblical imagery and klezmer inflected melodies\, Caplan re-appropriates ancient sounds and themes with a decidedly contemporary twist. Ben released his first studio album in 2011\, and has spent the last ten years recording music and performing to ever growing audiences in music clubs and theatres around the world.Terra SpencerSince her 2018 solo debut\, Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter and 2021 CFMA Contemporary Singer of the Year nominee Terra Spencer has won over audiences by marrying fingerstyle guitar\, gospel piano\, and her butterscotch voice with onstage humour and 70s wood-paneled warmth. Her self-produced second album Chasing Rabbits was recently named 2021 Music NS winner and nominated for 2021 ECMA Folk Recording of the Year. Terra will join Ben Caplan for a cross-Canada tour in spring 2022 to introduce their new album\, Old News. In a room of 5 or 500\, every show is a knee-to-knee conversation with a natural storyteller. “The real deal.” – Ron SexsmithPre TICKETS £14 Book & choose your seats vi a the Ticket Source link:

SUMMARY:VENICE - DANIEL IBBOTSON
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Ibbotson\n\n\n\n“This exhibition will tell the story of my inclusion and ongoing adventure at this year’s Venice Biennale”. \n\n\n\nI was asked by European Cultural Centre to exhibit at this year’s show and it was an opportunity too good to turn down. I decided to do something really risky and go and live in the city of Venice and create my work\, virtually from scratch\, during the three weeks leading up to the show. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition at Upfront also includes work from other artists\, who contributed significantly to my “Venice Adventure”.

SUMMARY:Me And My Friends
DESCRIPTION:“A sublime fusion that combines pastoral dreaminess with the heat of highlife and Afrobeat sounds” Songlines \n\n\n\n“Such interesting influences… beautiful” Cerys Matthews \n\n\n\nMe and My Friends play soulful\, poignant music with a beat: a unique blend of Afrobeat grooves with deliciously rich harmonies\, languidly graceful cello and playfully funky clarinet\, all tied together by the hauntingly elegant voice of singer and guitarist Nick Rasle. \n\n\n\nOver the past decade Me and My Friends have carved out their very own niche of sun-drenched music for the soul. Growing from the basements of Leeds to tours across Europe\, along the way they have gained support from the likes of Gilles Peterson\, Cerys Matthews\, FiP\, Soundway Records\, and Quantic. Their whirlwind live shows are dedicated to creating the warmth and connection that all humans crave\, with a penchant for tearing up their own tracks with explosive dynamism and spontaneity. \n\n\n\nNew album “Before I Saw The Sea” represents an audacious development in the band’s signature sound. Intimate and reflective\, it is an immersive set of night time meditations conceived during lockdown\, its laidback grooves combining bittersweet nostalgia with hypnotic rhythmic interplay. This is a record made to accompany journeys when none could be made\, as we awaited the parting of the stormy clouds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: £16.00 Under 16’s £10. \n\n\n\nClick her to book online: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/upfrontartslimited/t-moemqxaPre concert supper available 6pm. SUMMARY:Ahmed Dickinson & Eduardo Martin
DESCRIPTION:Eduardo Martin\, the Grammy nominated and multiple life-time achievement award-winning Cuban guitarist and composer\, joins forces with fellow award-winning\, London based Cuban musician\, Ahmed Dickinson – a guitarist described as a ‘true pioneer’ by Classic FM – to present ‘The Bridge’. Launching an expansive tour of the UK and Ireland\, Martin and Dickinson perform the music of their long-awaited album\, ‘The Bridge’: a carefully curated compilation of Eduardo’s most alluring works for two guitars\, where rock merges with son montunos; old Yoruba chants\, feel-good rumbas and funk- boleros\, with cinematic pieces sitting alongside Cuban tumbaos with slap bass. Perfect sound bites exploring the many facets of the guitar tradition from across the Americas. By incorporating the influences of jazz\, flamenco\, pop\, Afro and traditional Cuban melodic and rhythmic intricacies\, the music bridges the gap between generations and continents\, past and present\, uniting teacher and student. \n\n\n\nSays Dickinson:“It is a privilege to play with Eduardo. Playing his music gives me a sense of musical sincerity. It is exhilarating to go on stage and convey all these melodies and rhythms that sound fresh\, current and honest.” \n\n\n\nEduardo Martin explains:“The Bridge alludes precisely to the connections we have established musically\, Ahmed and I. Also\, the bridge that I establish throughout my compositions\, between genres and musical styles that interest me. Finally\, it is the connection with the audiences who enjoy our work.” \n\n\n\nHaving first met as student and teacher at the Superior Institute of Art in Havana\, the venerable musician and composer Martin instantly recognised in Dickinson a young man who knew the musical path he wanted to travel. The composer keenly followed Dickinson’s career over the years and a strong musical friendship developed. The pair first began to work together in 2014\, when Dickinson invited Martin to London to perform a concert of his works at the Bolivar Hall. Since that performance\, their musical partnership has flourished\, pausing only for the time of the pandemic. Both artists are hugely in demand as solo performers\, so to see them perform together in this project is one not to be missed. \n\n\n\nThis is a rare opportunity to catch guitar master\, Eduardo Martin\, on these shores. The collaboration with Ahmed Dickinson shares their rich culture and heritage\, through the duo’s much celebrated artistry. Martin tells us\, “This will be the first time we have been able to travel together since the pandemic. Playing live again fills me with a very great emotion. We have waited a long time and the feeling of anticipation and excitement to perform together again has only increased.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets £16Pre Concert Supper from 6pm booking essential Tel: 01768484538Book tickets here – http://www.ticketsource.co.uk/upfrontartslimited \n\n\n\nSUPPER MENUStarters: Tomato & Basil Soup; Mushroom Pate or Stilton Cheesecake.Mains: Goats Cheese\, Spring Onion & Hazelnut Quiche; Spinach Pancakes; Greek Salad or Mixed Bean Casserole with Rice. SUMMARY:HANNAH APPLEYARD and STUART SHORT
DESCRIPTION:Paintings & Sculpture \n\n\n\n\n\nHannah’s paintings are full of colour\, life & magic. She wants people to approach her work with an open mind and open gaze and let their imagination do the rest. Her inspiration is nature and the natural world and she is fascinated by the similarities between the macrocosm and the microcosm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nStuart is well known for his animal portraits. His latest paintings are more abstract and expressionist. He uses the play of light through oil glazes to build up colours\, which give his paintings a luminescent quality.Stuart’s sculptural work is influenced by Bronze Age design patterns which are found carved into stones at ancient sites in the U.K.
