SUMMARY:Hedera (Quintet)
DESCRIPTION:Hedera is a new Bristol-based quintet of instrumentalists brought together by a desire to lean into the slower and more delicate side of European folk traditions. \n\n\n\nTheir growing repertoire draws on French\, English\, Eastern European and Scandinavian music\, with playful and inventive arrangements that reflect the diverse array of experience brought by members of the band: violinists Maisie Brett and Lulu Ruby Rose\, clarinettist Isis Wolf-Light\, Beth Roberts on double bass\, and Tamsin Elliott on accordion and harp. Intrigued by the combination of strings and reeds that seems to lend itself to effortless arranging\, they have also now begun to create original music together. Their debut release ‘Waterwheel’ was composed by Tamsin Elliott and filmed by Elly Lucas in a dramatic Perthshire arboretum; it premiered on Folk Radio in October 2022.  \n\n\n\nThe project began life as a group of friends playing folk tunes around winter bonfires\, grateful to have a collective musical outlet while their regular projects (Solana\, Opa Rosa\, Hands of the Heron) were unable to perform due to the pandemic. They discovered a shared love of listening deeply\, playing slowly\, and finding new ways to support each other musically. Over time\, the ensemble has evolved into something more structured\, but still retains the intimacy and gentle conviviality of its beginnings. Their debut performance took place at Fire in the Mountain festival in June 2022\, and in December 2022\, they sold out their first ever hometown gig at The Greenbank\, with such a demand for tickets that they seriously contemplated adding a second date. Their scheduled performances for 2024 include King’s Place (London)\, Ashburton Arts Centre and Black Fen Folk Club (Cambridge). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS HERE www.ticketsource.co.uk/upfrontartslimited

SUMMARY:"Our Land in Colour" Oil paintings by Julie Dumbarton
DESCRIPTION:It is a pleasure for Upfront to host an exhibition by Julie Dumbarton. Her first solo exhibition as a young artist was with us 22 years ago. \n\n\n\nShe recently returned to Cumbria having lived in Scotland for 20 years. Julie has has exhibited nationally and internationally and won numerous awards. She was also on sky arts\, “Landscape artist of the year”. \n\n\n\nJulie’s paintings mainly represent elements of landscapes and scenery she has seen\, loved and remembered\, which are then combined to make one beautiful image. \n\n\n\n“Colour plays the main role in what I create. If I was forced to sum up what I want to express\, I would describe them as dreamlike and nostalgic\, yet contemporary. They speak of memories and the endurance of images. Atmospheric and melancholic\, they are inconsequential moments that are highly charged. As a landscape artist I endeavour to inspire and nurture our love of the natural world”.

SUMMARY:The Brothers Gillespie
DESCRIPTION:Described by Folk Radio UK as ‘weaving an especially compelling magic’\, and ‘showing British acoustic music in its best possible light’\, Northumbrian duo The Brothers Gillespie make music that is animated by lyrical songwriting\, fine fingerstyle guitar playing\, multi-instrumental musicianship and ‘the glorious tones of their blood harmony’ (Sam Lee). \n\n\n\nBrothers James and Sam Gillespie found their sound growing up in the fells and valleys of Northumberland\, their songs often describing relationships with wild places and the experience of finding oneself in a world alive with soul. The music comes to them most strongly when walking in the borderlands with their packs and instruments which remains a regular practice for them. This spirit is channeled into their live performances which have a rare and intimate energy\, both ethereal and earthy\, romantic and radical. The brothers have travelled far and wide with their music and have played at Cambridge and Sidmouth Folk Festivals and opened for Lankum and Sam Lee. In 2021 they featured in the English Heritage ‘Songs of England’ recording series that appeared on BBC Radio 4. The release of their new album ‘The Merciful Road’ (‘pure magic’\, Living Tradition) in Spring 2022 saw them embark on their most extensive national tour to date.‘The Merciful Road’ was recorded in a cottage by the banks of the river Tweed and like their previous album ‘The Fell’\, it blends rootsy\, acoustic elements to create a rich warm sound with a touch of vintage magic. In some ways it is an album about finding the thread of love and belonging in a world that seems to be nonetheless unravelling. \n\n\n\nThe brothers emerge from the time of lockdowns with a yet greater reverence for the joy and privilege of being with an audience in real time and space.‘Our music is inspired by the still wild soul of the land in which we live\, a land alive with presences\, not owned by anyone. It is about seeing with the eye of the heart and recovering our imaginations. It is about finding home\, belonging and each other in a world which is singing to us as we sing to it’. \n\n\n\n“Anyone who has seen the brothers live will surely attest that it is an experience that will stay with you. There is a feeling of warmth that exudes from them and affects everyone in the room” – Folk London \n\n\n\n“Not since the minimal chamber folk of Simon And Garfunkel has two voices and an acoustic guitar sounded so absolutely perfect.” FATEA \n\n\n\nStunning songs beautifully sung and played. Without doubt a classic in the making from a duo potent with potential.” – Northern Sky \n\n\n\n“Uncluttered\, simply but intoxicatingly arranged and adorned by their magical harmonies\, musically steeped in the earth\, grass and leaves that mark the pathways\, this is a road you really need to travel.” – Bright Young Folk \n\n\n\n“Warning to all folk fest and club orgs. book these lads while you still can because I have a feeling that they aren’t going to be short of work. – Mike Harding \n\n\n\n“The stars of the show were The Brother’s Gillespie – more than an hour of fantastic musicianship. Imagine the guitar work of the early Nic Jones\, the close harmony work of the Dransfields and the commitment and honesty of Bob Davenport rolled into two brothers and you’ll get some idea.” Mike Harding \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPre concert supper available from 6pm (Booking essential phone 01768484538) \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets £14 each. SUMMARY:HANNAH APPLEYARD and STUART SHORT
DESCRIPTION:Paintings & Sculpture \n\n\n\n\n\nHannah’s paintings are full of colour\, life & magic. She wants people to approach her work with an open mind and open gaze and let their imagination do the rest. Her inspiration is nature and the natural world and she is fascinated by the similarities between the macrocosm and the microcosm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nStuart is well known for his animal portraits. His latest paintings are more abstract and expressionist. He uses the play of light through oil glazes to build up colours\, which give his paintings a luminescent quality.Stuart’s sculptural work is influenced by Bronze Age design patterns which are found carved into stones at ancient sites in the U.K.

SUMMARY:Ahmed Dickinson & Eduardo Martin
DESCRIPTION:Eduardo Martin\, the Grammy nominated and multiple life-time achievement award-winning Cuban guitarist and composer\, joins forces with fellow award-winning\, London based Cuban musician\, Ahmed Dickinson – a guitarist described as a ‘true pioneer’ by Classic FM – to present ‘The Bridge’. Launching an expansive tour of the UK and Ireland\, Martin and Dickinson perform the music of their long-awaited album\, ‘The Bridge’: a carefully curated compilation of Eduardo’s most alluring works for two guitars\, where rock merges with son montunos; old Yoruba chants\, feel-good rumbas and funk- boleros\, with cinematic pieces sitting alongside Cuban tumbaos with slap bass. Perfect sound bites exploring the many facets of the guitar tradition from across the Americas. By incorporating the influences of jazz\, flamenco\, pop\, Afro and traditional Cuban melodic and rhythmic intricacies\, the music bridges the gap between generations and continents\, past and present\, uniting teacher and student. \n\n\n\nSays Dickinson:“It is a privilege to play with Eduardo. Playing his music gives me a sense of musical sincerity. It is exhilarating to go on stage and convey all these melodies and rhythms that sound fresh\, current and honest.” \n\n\n\nEduardo Martin explains:“The Bridge alludes precisely to the connections we have established musically\, Ahmed and I. Also\, the bridge that I establish throughout my compositions\, between genres and musical styles that interest me. Finally\, it is the connection with the audiences who enjoy our work.” \n\n\n\nHaving first met as student and teacher at the Superior Institute of Art in Havana\, the venerable musician and composer Martin instantly recognised in Dickinson a young man who knew the musical path he wanted to travel. The composer keenly followed Dickinson’s career over the years and a strong musical friendship developed. The pair first began to work together in 2014\, when Dickinson invited Martin to London to perform a concert of his works at the Bolivar Hall. Since that performance\, their musical partnership has flourished\, pausing only for the time of the pandemic. Both artists are hugely in demand as solo performers\, so to see them perform together in this project is one not to be missed. \n\n\n\nThis is a rare opportunity to catch guitar master\, Eduardo Martin\, on these shores. The collaboration with Ahmed Dickinson shares their rich culture and heritage\, through the duo’s much celebrated artistry. Martin tells us\, “This will be the first time we have been able to travel together since the pandemic. Playing live again fills me with a very great emotion. We have waited a long time and the feeling of anticipation and excitement to perform together again has only increased.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets £16Pre Concert Supper from 6pm booking essential Tel: 01768484538Book tickets here – http://www.ticketsource.co.uk/upfrontartslimited \n\n\n\nSUPPER MENUStarters: Tomato & Basil Soup; Mushroom Pate or Stilton Cheesecake.Mains: Goats Cheese\, Spring Onion & Hazelnut Quiche; Spinach Pancakes; Greek Salad or Mixed Bean Casserole with Rice. SUMMARY:Me And My Friends
DESCRIPTION:“A sublime fusion that combines pastoral dreaminess with the heat of highlife and Afrobeat sounds” Songlines \n\n\n\n“Such interesting influences… beautiful” Cerys Matthews \n\n\n\nMe and My Friends play soulful\, poignant music with a beat: a unique blend of Afrobeat grooves with deliciously rich harmonies\, languidly graceful cello and playfully funky clarinet\, all tied together by the hauntingly elegant voice of singer and guitarist Nick Rasle. \n\n\n\nOver the past decade Me and My Friends have carved out their very own niche of sun-drenched music for the soul. Growing from the basements of Leeds to tours across Europe\, along the way they have gained support from the likes of Gilles Peterson\, Cerys Matthews\, FiP\, Soundway Records\, and Quantic. Their whirlwind live shows are dedicated to creating the warmth and connection that all humans crave\, with a penchant for tearing up their own tracks with explosive dynamism and spontaneity. \n\n\n\nNew album “Before I Saw The Sea” represents an audacious development in the band’s signature sound. Her work strikes a chord with both the local folk\, who are known for their love of sheep\, foxhounds and trail hounds\, also visitors who are struck by the beauty of the area and its inhabitants. \n\n\n\nMary Ann’s work is entirely in watercolour. She is a master of her medium\, referred to in many publications and documentaries\, using pure pigment and water\, beginning with large strokes using a 3” wide brush\, and staying with large brushes throughout\, only resorting to small ones for fine detail\, such as eyes. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition includes original paintings and framed limited edition giclee prints of Mary Ann’s watercolours. \n\n\n\n\nInquisitive\n\n\n\nDaffodils\n\n\n\nOriental Poppies\n\n\n\nOnward

SUMMARY:N'famady Kouyate with live band
DESCRIPTION:N’famady Kouyaté is a young energetic master musician from Guinea (Conakry)\, who relocated to Cardiff (Wales) in 2019. A talented multi-instrumentalist who wowed audiences across the UK and Ireland during autumn/winter 2019/20 with his modern interpretations of traditional West African Mandingue songs and rhythms supporting Gruff Rhys on the Pang! album tour. N’famady’s primary instrument is the balafon – the traditional wooden xylophone\, sacred to West African culture and his family heritage of the griot/djeli. In Guinea he founded ‘Les Héritiers du Mandingue’ a tradi-modern group that toured extensively in West Africa. \n\n\n\nIn the UK N’famady has played both as a solo artist and with a full band line up – where his arrangements are a fusion of Mandingue African with western jazz\, pop\, indie\, and funk influences provided by an ever-evolving collective of musicians.
