SUMMARY:An Dannsa Dub - future dub from Ancient Scotland
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome An Dannsa Dub for their first major performance in Cumbria.  \n\n\n\nMusic is one big conversation. And few bands live at the heart of it like An Dannsa Dub. \n\n\n\nBorn from a love of traditional Scottish folk\, dub reggae and dance music\, together they summon the joyous\, communal energy of a cèilidh and a sound system session. Their name comes from the Gaelic for “The Dub Dance”. Their sound celebrates the ancient Gaelic and West African rhythms that influenced reggae\, which in turn\, via sound system culture and dub’s pioneering remixes\, produced modern dance music. Their live shows and recordings are a seamless\, pulsating fusion of all this and more.An Dannsa Dub have carried this unique\, unstoppable sound to the UK festival circuit. They’ve thrilled a 10\,000 strong crowd at Boomtown Fair and have headlined a sold out show at Celtic Connections\, the UK’s premier Celtic music festival. \n\n\n\nLaurie Cuffe – Ceòl is Craic“We hired An Dannsa Dub to headline our Celtic Connections gig in January 2023.They didn’t disappoint! DESCRIPTION:Hand Shadow Artist – Drew Colby \n\n\n\n\n\nSuitable for Adult & 12 years+ \n\n\n\nWhat is this magic of light and dark that so transfixes young and old? It is the ancient art of Hand Shadows (or Shadowgraphy) – the art of creating and animating shadow images using little more than the performer’s hands. In Drew Colby’s hands the artform is a source of comedy\, beauty and wonder. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExpect rabbits doing what rabbits do\, famous extra-terrestrials from the silver screen and many more endearing and astonishing characters all made with just a light\, two hands and a screen\, before a show-stopping shadow duet rounds off this virtuoso performance. \n\n\n\nStand-up comedy meets cabaret meets visual shadow feast! Expect a gallery of notorious politicians and tributes to well—loved films…Colby leads the audience on a hilarious and highlyskilled journey from the age of the caveman to the present day\, via the magic of thesilver screen\, TV cartoons and (in)famous politicians. Many of the classic\, traditionalhand shadow routines are included in the show\, as well as exciting shadow techniques(multiple shadows and coloured shadows). The show contains elements of stand-up comedy\, gentle political satire and a long list ofshadows that can be made with two hands. No shadow stone has been left unturned. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBased in London\, Drew is founder of the Finger and Thumb Theatre\, specialising in hand shadow puppets and ‘instant puppetry’. SUMMARY:"My Shadow and Me"
DESCRIPTION:Hand Shadow Artist – Drew Colby \n\n\n\n\n\nBased in London\, Drew is founder of the Finger and Thumb Theatre\, specialising in hand shadow puppets and ‘instant puppetry’. Described as ‘a man who can create almost anything with his hand shadows’\, he has performed all over the world. The new company name is “Shadowgraphy”\, which covers the diversity of Drew’s work\, including television and advertising. https://www.shadowgraphy.co.uk/431685363 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMy Shadow and Me is like a cartoon created live out of nothing but darkness and light. One person (and his shadow) meet and go on an incredible\, imaginative\, shadowy journey where creatures emerge\, engage and transform beautifully. The show uses minimal language in combination with unusual interpretations of classical music and non-verbal voice effects. Little encounters between characters are explored and tiny stories unfold. Many are funny\, some are sweet. The ever fascinating and adorable hand shadow bunny makes an appearance as part of a simple magic trick\, and the show ends with a colourful and impressive finale in which multiple shadow characters appear all at the same time – made with just two hands!! \n\n\n\nAll Tickets £8.00. SUMMARY:VENICE - DANIEL IBBOTSON
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Ibbotson\n\n\n\n“This exhibition will tell the story of my inclusion and ongoing adventure at this year’s Venice Biennale”. \n\n\n\nI was asked by European Cultural Centre to exhibit at this year’s show and it was an opportunity too good to turn down. I decided to do something really risky and go and live in the city of Venice and create my work\, virtually from scratch\, during the three weeks leading up to the show. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition at Upfront also includes work from other artists\, who contributed significantly to my “Venice Adventure”.

SUMMARY:Ben Caplan (Canada) with support from Terra Spencer (Canada)
DESCRIPTION:“Sometimes it takes a global pandemic to slow down and focus on the fundamentals. When Ben Caplan lost the opportunity to tour and create with the regular cadre of musicians that he typically works with\, he went into a tiny studio and made an achingly beautiful solo album. Caplan is now back in the UK touring a solo show full of contrasts and surprises. He’s bringing along support act Terra Spencer to share sneak peeks from their upcoming collaborative album too!”Ben CaplanBen Caplan is both the roar of the hurricane and the eye of the storm. He has an uncanny ability to channel both wild abandon and quiet introspection. His songwriting pulls from many diverse influences but both his music and his lyrics regularly draw from his Jewish heritage. Often mixing biblical imagery and klezmer inflected melodies\, Caplan re-appropriates ancient sounds and themes with a decidedly contemporary twist. Ben released his first studio album in 2011\, and has spent the last ten years recording music and performing to ever growing audiences in music clubs and theatres around the world.Terra SpencerSince her 2018 solo debut\, Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter and 2021 CFMA Contemporary Singer of the Year nominee Terra Spencer has won over audiences by marrying fingerstyle guitar\, gospel piano\, and her butterscotch voice with onstage humour and 70s wood-paneled warmth. Her self-produced second album Chasing Rabbits was recently named 2021 Music NS winner and nominated for 2021 ECMA Folk Recording of the Year. Terra will join Ben Caplan for a cross-Canada tour in spring 2022 to introduce their new album\, Old News. In a room of 5 or 500\, every show is a knee-to-knee conversation with a natural storyteller. “The real deal.” – Ron SexsmithPre TICKETS £14 Book & choose your seats vi a the Ticket Source link:

SUMMARY:Pinocchio
DESCRIPTION:(every Wednesday\, Friday & Saturday\, plus Bank Holiday Monday 29th August) \n\n\n\nThe story about a puppet that comes to life and becomes a real boy is known throughout the world and staging the story using puppets is a challenge for any company. Using a mixture of long string marionettes and rod puppets\, Pinocchio is carved on stage\, comes alive and sets off on his many adventures. He performs on a marionette stage within the puppet show meeting two clowns\, Harlequin and Pulcinell; he is tricked by a cat and a fox into burying and losing his newly earned money; he flies on the back of a pigeon and he is chased and swallowed by a huge shark. Finally of course\, the magic Blue Fairy lends a hand because Pinocchio has learnt to be good and at the very end he becomes a real boy. \n\n\n\nWe recommend the show is suitable for ages 4 – 94.The production is given great energy by the specially composed music of local musician Bill Lloyd. \n\n\n\n\nWith the puppet theatre boss\n\n\n\nPinocchio’s nose grows\n\n\n\nIn the jaws of the shark\n\n\n\nPinocchio meets a dragon\n\n\n\n\n\nThe woodcutters\n\n\n\nPinocchio Meets the Cricket\n\n\n\nPinocchio springs to life\n\n\n\nThe Fox & the Cat\n\n\n\nPinocchio Flies on a Pigeon\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Adults £10\, Children £8.50\, Family (2 adults & 2 children) £33.

SUMMARY:From Xian\, China to Upfront\, Penrith!
DESCRIPTION:Original Chinese Paintings by Milly (Mrs Shang Chaofeng)\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition of Milly’s work has been brought to us by John Keith\, local art collector\, who is an Upfront Gallery supporter and introduced us to Milly’s work a few years ago. He dubbed Chaofeng ( Milly\, in English)\, “The Chinese Modigliani”. She was unaware who Modigliani was until he sent her a book of Modigliani images. Not speaking Mandarin\, John solved how to communicate with Milly. During the past 5 years Milly’s art has continued to develop\, and John has worked out how to buy\, pay for and get delivery of her work.Largely self-taught\, Milly’s work features almost entirely women\, in social meetings\, or a mum with children. They are all set in a stylish period China\, many with cats. Each work is totally original and she works daily\, unless she is in her small gallery in the Art Quarter of Xian\, the Chinese city famous for the Terracotta Warriors. \n\n\n\nAll paintings are for sale at £299. Framed in England using non-reflective glass. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMilly’ story in her words:“My name is Chaofeng Shang\, born on 16th Nov 1953 in Xi’an\, Shanxi. \n\n\n\nI went to Guomian Forth Factory Primary School\, and then studied in Xi’an 18’s High School. I started my first job in Xi’an Hardware and Electrical Company as a sales representative in 1970. I was then promoted to Sales Manager. \n\n\n\nIn 1996\, as a result of Chinese Structural Reform\, I was made redundant\, so I started my little gallery in Beilin\, Xi’an. This was when I started learning framing paintings\, and became very interested in painting. I then went to study Chinese Painting. \n\n\n\nMy current painting style is influenced by Chinese traditional ink painting. Painting is the love of my life and each one of my works is the reflection of my passion”.

SUMMARY:Richard Durrant : Music For Midsummer
DESCRIPTION:Friday 10th June at 8pm \n\n\n\nCritically acclaimed guitarist and composer Richard Durrant returns to Upfront as part of his popular 27-day Music for Midsummer tour 2022\n\n\n\nAt this concert Richard will play his Sussex downland inspired “The Crest The Coombe The Twitten” and the richly melodic “Book of Spells” on a concert guitar made from a 5\,000 year old English oak.You will also hear unaccompanied Bach played on a ukulele made from cedar rescued from the Oregon “Biscuit Fire”.  \n\n\n\nNow in its eighth year\, Richard’s 2022 musical pilgrimage takes him from the magnificent St Magnus Cathedral on Orkney\, through the UK to Brighton Open Air Theatre for midsummer and further concerts in Sussex and Kent. Once again\, to reduce his carbon footprint\, Richard will be travelling between venues by bicycle carrying his instruments on a trailer. To coincide with the tour a new album “The Sleep of a King” will be launched. Like much of Richard’s music this collection of original guitar solos is inspired by the landscape of the British Isles.Says Richard: “The intense joy I feel performing live can only be enhanced by sharing the stage each night with my bicycle!” \n\n\n\n“My new favourite guitarist… Richard Durrant sits completely outside the accepted genres. He has a peculiar and wonderful mind.” Tom Robinson\, BBC6 Music \n\n\n\n“Richard’s album Rewilding is beyond beautiful.”  Isabella Tree\, best selling author \n\n\n\nPlease listen and watch: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll Tickets £16.50. SUMMARY:Hive Geometrix
DESCRIPTION:Paintings by Stephen Livingstone \n\n\n\n\n\nBeehives are places of mystery and magic. Even beekeepers\, who over many centuries have developed an intimate\, symbiotic relationship with honeybees\, can never properly understand the complex inner-workings of their hives. \n\n\n\nThe paintings in this exhibition are a visualisation of the inside of a working beehive\, an attempt to represent the activities of the queens\, workers and drones throughout a ‘bee year’. They portray\, in symbolic form\, the bee’s political and social activities and their often desperate efforts to survive\, aided and abetted by the interventions of their human guardians. The paintings are cutaways\, architectural diagrams of the interior structures of a beehive\, each panel representing a particular part of the hive\, the colours selected and layered in order to evoke the light and scent sensing experiences of the bees. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition has been made in collaboration with Penrith Beekeepers Association and is supported by Arts Council England. \n\n\n\nStephen Livingstone is a visual artist who is based in Durham. His work deals with human impact upon landscapes and habitats and often involves collaboration with museums and archives\, academic institutions and individuals with specialist knowledge and skills. He has developed major projects for the British Library\, the National Trust\, Durham University and the Museum of Art and Design in New York. \n\n\n\n\nSpring Bloom\n\n\n\nAbandoned Hive – detail\n\n\n\nWinter Brood\n\n\n\nBrace Comb\n\n\n\nHeather Honey – detail

Aba and his sound system have been playing throughout UK and Europe for over 30 years. He has been a resident sound system at Notting Hill Carnival since 1993 and was voted the No. 1 DJ in the World by DJ Magazine in the same yearAba used to deejay on Jah Tubby’s sound system; at that time he was known as ‘Jasmine Joe’\, their slightly extrovert mic man. \n\n\n\nWhen Aba embraced the Rastafarian faith he adopted a new and more positive attitude and\, with his rediscovered faith\, a new name: Aba Shanti-i. His new name in turn became the name of his soundsystem. \n\n\n\nOver the last 10 years Aba has been playing his sound\, and the music created by his brother Blood Shanti on that sound\, in small and large halls throughout this country and in the process has developed a following covering the widest spectrum of Jah’s humanity \n\n\n\nPeople come to an Aba Shanti-i session to discard their worries\, to lose themselves in the music – and by doing so cast off the mental shackles. \n\n\n\nThe vibe that Aba generates has brought him to the attention of the media and in the last three years Aba Shanti-I has been the subject of three television programmes: the German ‘Deep in Dub’\, the French ‘Aba at Carnival’ and Big Issue’s ‘Urban Rites’. SUMMARY:New Horizons by Frances Winder
DESCRIPTION:A Post Lockdown Collection of Paintings by Frances Winder \n\n\n\n“I found that lockdown and the isolation and stress caused by Covid created a big problem with my art work. It paralysed me. I found myself unable to pick up a brush\, only able to sketch very locally. I was cut off from my inspiration which was usually to sketch\, explore and experience everything in a wide range of environments\, enjoying feeling free and alive to the world. I have a lovely garden and space to be in\, so I was very lucky\, but I felt trapped and too depressed to paint. This stop to my work has made me rethink what is important. I have wanted to experiment and find more meaning in my painting and other art projects. When I am painting\, I explore colour and texture\, moved by mood and atmosphere. I love walking and the Lakes area and this features in much of my work. Sea and shore\, the wide skies and fells\, as well as the weather are modifying aspects that I love. I do prefer a good storm to paint. Recently I have been more constrained and I am exploring the rich diversity of meadow lands and woodland.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrances has exhibited in the Royal Academy\, the Royal Watercolour Society at Bankside gallery\, the Lakes Artists\, as well as many times in the Cumbrian open at Up Front gallery.

SUMMARY:Debby Akam - Paintings & Gary Power - Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Gary Power – Tintotem Parade\n\n\n\nDebby Akam – Thinking in Colour\n\n\n\nPhoebe Power – christl\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDEBBY AKAM – “THINKING IN COLOUR” . Paintings + Woodcut Prints. New paintings on canvas and original woodcut prints are investigations of layered space created through colour relationships and gestural brush marks. Working with colour energises and motivates me\, and I am concerned with its’ potential as a source of positive emotional response linking personal experience with wider themes of celebration\, mutability and renewal. \n\n\n\nFor me\, the loosening of intentional control over parts of the making process can be surprising and inspiring\, and I use semi – random processes such as wax- resist\, printing and frottage(rubbing) as a tactic to evade consciously reasoned preconceptions I might have. Fragments of experience from everyday activities\, walking and taking photographs and sketching in my semi- rural home environment inform the work. Patterns and motifs from woven and printed textiles are also a source of inspiration and summon up memories of my childhood in Borneo. I’m trying to find an equivalent for these diverse experiences from past\, present and imagined futures. The process of painting is the catalyst that brings them all together and enables them to come to life in a new form.Debby Akam  Recent exhibitions include Printfest 2019 where she was the winner of the Cranfield Prize; Painting the Language of Colour: solo exhibition at The Old Courthouse\, Shap 2021; Through the Locking Glass\, Rheged 2021 and Love Nature More Northern Print\, Newcastle 2021.  \n\n\n\nGARY POWER – “TINTOTEM PARADE”.Tintotem Parade is a group of sculptures that often reference architectural motifs and images typically found and commemorated in the traditional Public Monument. However\, rather than celebrate notable people or military victories they instead revise and examine this convention in a playful critique of the hubris often associated with their grandeur. This alternative collection of Counter-Monuments while still utilising plinths\, the pedestal\, different kinds of columns and towers are not for example made of stone or bronze\, but stacks of discarded tins\, transformed by colour to celebrate the value of upcycling. Atop each of the sculptures are displays of transformed\, but familiar objects\, such as teapots\, toy soldiers\, figurines\, bowls\, or distorted watering cans. Instead of a monument to a singular hero\, these symbols suggest what other totemic objects\, events and new ideas we may now share\, revere\, fear\, or contemplate. Gary Power is a visual artist\, working across a variety of media\, particularly in sculpture\, where he has carried out a number of large scale commissions. His work was selected for the Trinity Buoys Drawing Prize (2018) and most recently for the RA Summer Exhibition (2021) where one of his Tintotems was displayed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial Evening Event 26th February 2022 from 6 – 9pmMeet the artists while you enjoy a glass of wine and nibbles. This will include a rare opportunity to see ‘Christl’\, a live poetry performance with Phoebe Power and Gary Power at 7pm. This is a 20-minute performance piece that brings together poetry and sculpture to tell the story of an Austrian post-war migrant to the UK\, Christl. Through a ritualistic process of commemoration\, our work explores how we might amplify marginalised voices from the past through an engagement with family history across three generations.Phoebe Power is the author of Shrines of Upper Austria (Carcanet\, 2018)\, which was awarded the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. Her new work Book of Days\, a long poem in response to the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage\, will be released in April. SUMMARY:Christmas Supper & Theatre Evening
DESCRIPTION:The Real Story of Christmas as Revealed in – “THE SCROOGE DIARIES” – Peter Macqueen \n\n\n\n\n\n‘Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that.’“Oh no he wasn’t! Bah! Dead? Humbug\, Mr. Dickens! Dead? As sure as the  moths in my wardrobe have be-shredded my best nightcap\, Marley was not dead but rather sitting on some sun-soaked beach squandering all the hard-earned money that he had so fraudulently embezzled from my firm over the years! Dead? Bah!You know nothing Mr.Dickens! YOU are a fraud sir – an embezzler of the truth! A fake news-smith! A charlatan…….Charlatan Dickens! Bah! \n\n\n\nIn this revelatory exclusive\, Ebenezer Scrooge opens his Diary to expose the awful truth about Tiny Tim\, the Fezziwigs\, Jacob Marley… and that disgustingly jolly\, gluttonous\, consumer- driven Ghost of Christmas Present… as he reveals the real story behind a Christmas Carol and the vengeful\, slanderous\, upstart author of that novel. \n\n\n\n“ This is a funny\, lively diversion from all the madness that surrounds this time of year – if only for an evening. The small set is an architectural masterpiece of woodwork by designer Martin Johns.Macqueen becomes the person\, rather than acts the part\, so Scrooge is a twitching\, fidgeting\, grumbling\, but still likeable old codger.Macqueen analyses and deconstructs the works of Dickens to prove the author is not as great as everyone thinks he is and cleverly works in modern day issues. There isn’t a hint of Christmas about the set or the character – but thanks to a bit of outside help\, Scrooge ends up full of the Christmas spirit – and so do we“. Mark Green Cumberland News \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a special pre-Christmas event. This will be the Peter Macqueen’s 4th visit to Upfront. We will begin the evening with a three course Christmas Supper from 6pm and “The Scrooge Diaries” will take place in the theatre at 8pm. The supper menu will be on the website very soon.TICKETS:Joint Supper & Theatre Ticket £37.50. Supper from 6pmTheatre Ticket Only £12.50. SUMMARY:The Langan Band with support from Flew The Arrow
DESCRIPTION:We are looking forward to welcoming back old friends of Upfront Arts Venue \n\n\n\nFor a knees up\, dancing folk music session with one of the top live trios in the country. High energy\, unhinged\, and musically extravagant\, taking traditional acoustic idioms and delivering with punk abandonment and virtuosic flare. A dynamic three piece offering a unique sound emerging from Celtic\, Gypsy Swing\, Roma and Flamenco and tuned in savvy. Wrapping pan European traditional acoustic music with infectious grooves\, epic\, pounding\, sing along\, punch the air anthems to intricately arranged instrumentals. Challenging the limitations of what people might expect acoustic instruments to sound like\, the use of bowed harmonics between fiddle and bass can be as menacing and eerie as it can be psychedelic and mesmerising. \n\n\n\nPercussion provided by the front man Langan\, whilst singing and driving the rhythm guitar\, he somehow co-ordinates the operating of a cajon and a tambourine with his feet – bringing the driving\, swinging groove of the rhythm guitar together with his foot percussion resulting in an impressively tight band sound with a tempo that is free to go anywhere. Langan\, flanked on one side by Caplin\, a Hebridean classically trained violinist who is as adept at long bowed orchestral harmony passages as he is with swashbuckling dazzlingly quick tune playing and improvising. On his other side there’s Tunstall on Double Bass\, sometimes utilising his sonorous bow technique in conjunction with Caplin to create eerie soundscapes\, but mostly he’s fiercely pounding out bass lines which lock in seamlessly to Langan’s foot operated percussion and fiery rhythmic guitar playing to produce irresistible high energy\, bouncy grooves\, with beautifully subtle harmonies and vocals.‘Astonishing work\, boundlessly inventive… driving rhythms and mesmerising folk melodies’ R2 Magazine  \n\n\n\nFlew The ArrowFlew The Arrow is an Alt/Folk artist from the West Coast of Scotland\, residing in Glasgow\, where he builds his reputation as an Acoustic Songwriter. Now accompanied by Ross Hull on Fiddle\, Caitlin MacKenzie on Flute\, and Sarah McWhinney on Cello \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis will be a standing gig. \n\n\n\nSome seats can be booked over the phone for anyone who can’t stand for the whole evening. \n\n\n\nAll Tickets £16.50
