Aba and his sound system have been playing throughout UK and Europe for over 30 years. He has been a resident sound system at Notting Hill Carnival since 1993 and was voted the No. 1 DJ in the World by DJ Magazine in the same yearAba used to deejay on Jah Tubby’s sound system; at that time he was known as ‘Jasmine Joe’\, their slightly extrovert mic man. \n\n\n\nWhen Aba embraced the Rastafarian faith he adopted a new and more positive attitude and\, with his rediscovered faith\, a new name: Aba Shanti-i. His new name in turn became the name of his soundsystem. \n\n\n\nOver the last 10 years Aba has been playing his sound\, and the music created by his brother Blood Shanti on that sound\, in small and large halls throughout this country and in the process has developed a following covering the widest spectrum of Jah’s humanity \n\n\n\nPeople come to an Aba Shanti-i session to discard their worries\, to lose themselves in the music – and by doing so cast off the mental shackles. \n\n\n\nThe vibe that Aba generates has brought him to the attention of the media and in the last three years Aba Shanti-I has been the subject of three television programmes: the German ‘Deep in Dub’\, the French ‘Aba at Carnival’ and Big Issue’s ‘Urban Rites’. This has resulted in a number of European dates to audiences bigger than Aba has ever played to before. \n\n\n\nBut in the UK\, Aba Shanti-i is most loved for his annual sound systems at Notting Hill Carnival where he has been resident since 1993. His notoriety has led him to be dubbed No. 1 DJ in the World by DJ Magazine in the same year. \n\n\n\n\n\nAba Shanti i – Sound System @ Notting Hill Carnival \n\n\n\nAba Shanti i in the mix \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPowered by North Fire Sound \n\n\n\nTickets £16 (advance)BUY TICKETS VIA LINK BELOW !! \n\n\n\nhttps://www.ticketsource.co.uk/upfrontartslimited/t-xpxker \n\n\n\n18 + event 4pm till Close

SUMMARY:An intimate evening with The Rob Heron Duo (rescheduled with limited capacity)
DESCRIPTION:An intimate evening with The Rob Heron Duo. Hosted in the barn gallery at Upfront Arts Venue with limited tickets available.Rob Heron and Tom Cronin don’t care what genre you choose to put them in – western swing\, blues\, country\, rock & roll or whatever else – as long as you understand that they’re 100% sincere and 100% immersed in this stuff. This is no lazy pastiche\, no dressing up box. They live and breathe this music and want you to get immersed with them. This duo show sees them exploring alternative arrangements of their classic songs\, alongside new music they have been working on through lockdown. Rob & Tom’s band\, The Tea Pad Orchestra\, are ten years into a remarkable story that now sees them playing venues and festivals across the UK and mainland Europe. The Tea Pad sound draws on myriad influences – from Hank Williams to Django Reinhardt\, Tom Waits to The Beatles – yet ultimately sounds like nobody else\, that North Eastern Swing style that’s utterly their own and changing all the time.Pre booked concert supper from 6pm booking essential -Tel: 01768484538This video below is Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra – the duo is a stripped back version \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets £12 book via ticketsource below \n\n\n\nhttps://www.ticketsource.co.uk/upfrontartslimited/t-arlykr

SUMMARY:Debby Akam - Paintings & Gary Power - Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Gary Power – Tintotem Parade\n\n\n\nDebby Akam – Thinking in Colour\n\n\n\nPhoebe Power – christl\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDEBBY AKAM – “THINKING IN COLOUR” . Paintings + Woodcut Prints. New paintings on canvas and original woodcut prints are investigations of layered space created through colour relationships and gestural brush marks. Working with colour energises and motivates me\, and I am concerned with its’ potential as a source of positive emotional response linking personal experience with wider themes of celebration\, mutability and renewal. \n\n\n\nFor me\, the loosening of intentional control over parts of the making process can be surprising and inspiring\, and I use semi – random processes such as wax- resist\, printing and frottage(rubbing) as a tactic to evade consciously reasoned preconceptions I might have. Fragments of experience from everyday activities\, walking and taking photographs and sketching in my semi- rural home environment inform the work. Patterns and motifs from woven and printed textiles are also a source of inspiration and summon up memories of my childhood in Borneo. I’m trying to find an equivalent for these diverse experiences from past\, present and imagined futures. The process of painting is the catalyst that brings them all together and enables them to come to life in a new form.Debby Akam  Recent exhibitions include Printfest 2019 where she was the winner of the Cranfield Prize; Painting the Language of Colour: solo exhibition at The Old Courthouse\, Shap 2021; Through the Locking Glass\, Rheged 2021 and Love Nature More Northern Print\, Newcastle 2021.  \n\n\n\nGARY POWER – “TINTOTEM PARADE”.Tintotem Parade is a group of sculptures that often reference architectural motifs and images typically found and commemorated in the traditional Public Monument. However\, rather than celebrate notable people or military victories they instead revise and examine this convention in a playful critique of the hubris often associated with their grandeur. This alternative collection of Counter-Monuments while still utilising plinths\, the pedestal\, different kinds of columns and towers are not for example made of stone or bronze\, but stacks of discarded tins\, transformed by colour to celebrate the value of upcycling. Atop each of the sculptures are displays of transformed\, but familiar objects\, such as teapots\, toy soldiers\, figurines\, bowls\, or distorted watering cans. Instead of a monument to a singular hero\, these symbols suggest what other totemic objects\, events and new ideas we may now share\, revere\, fear\, or contemplate. Gary Power is a visual artist\, working across a variety of media\, particularly in sculpture\, where he has carried out a number of large scale commissions. His work was selected for the Trinity Buoys Drawing Prize (2018) and most recently for the RA Summer Exhibition (2021) where one of his Tintotems was displayed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial Evening Event 26th February 2022 from 6 – 9pmMeet the artists while you enjoy a glass of wine and nibbles. This will include a rare opportunity to see ‘Christl’\, a live poetry performance with Phoebe Power and Gary Power at 7pm. This is a 20-minute performance piece that brings together poetry and sculpture to tell the story of an Austrian post-war migrant to the UK\, Christl. Through a ritualistic process of commemoration\, our work explores how we might amplify marginalised voices from the past through an engagement with family history across three generations.Phoebe Power is the author of Shrines of Upper Austria (Carcanet\, 2018)\, which was awarded the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. Her new work Book of Days\, a long poem in response to the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage\, will be released in April. SUMMARY:Christmas Supper & Theatre Evening
DESCRIPTION:The Real Story of Christmas as Revealed in – “THE SCROOGE DIARIES” – Peter Macqueen \n\n\n\n\n\n‘Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that.’“Oh no he wasn’t! Bah! Dead? Humbug\, Mr. Dickens! Dead? As sure as the  moths in my wardrobe have be-shredded my best nightcap\, Marley was not dead but rather sitting on some sun-soaked beach squandering all the hard-earned money that he had so fraudulently embezzled from my firm over the years! Dead? Bah!You know nothing Mr.Dickens! YOU are a fraud sir – an embezzler of the truth! A fake news-smith! A charlatan…….Charlatan Dickens! Bah! \n\n\n\nIn this revelatory exclusive\, Ebenezer Scrooge opens his Diary to expose the awful truth about Tiny Tim\, the Fezziwigs\, Jacob Marley… and that disgustingly jolly\, gluttonous\, consumer- driven Ghost of Christmas Present… as he reveals the real story behind a Christmas Carol and the vengeful\, slanderous\, upstart author of that novel. \n\n\n\n“ This is a funny\, lively diversion from all the madness that surrounds this time of year – if only for an evening. The small set is an architectural masterpiece of woodwork by designer Martin Johns.Macqueen becomes the person\, rather than acts the part\, so Scrooge is a twitching\, fidgeting\, grumbling\, but still likeable old codger.Macqueen analyses and deconstructs the works of Dickens to prove the author is not as great as everyone thinks he is and cleverly works in modern day issues. There isn’t a hint of Christmas about the set or the character – but thanks to a bit of outside help\, Scrooge ends up full of the Christmas spirit – and so do we“. Mark Green Cumberland News \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a special pre-Christmas event. This will be the Peter Macqueen’s 4th visit to Upfront. We will begin the evening with a three course Christmas Supper from 6pm and “The Scrooge Diaries” will take place in the theatre at 8pm. The supper menu will be on the website very soon.TICKETS:Joint Supper & Theatre Ticket £37.50. Supper from 6pmTheatre Ticket Only £12.50. Performance begins at 8pmChoose your ticket and seats & Book Online. Please note that Ticket Source will refund tickets (minus booking fee) for cancellations due to Covid/Winter illness. SUMMARY:The Langan Band with support from Flew The Arrow
DESCRIPTION:We are looking forward to welcoming back old friends of Upfront Arts Venue \n\n\n\nFor a knees up\, dancing folk music session with one of the top live trios in the country. High energy\, unhinged\, and musically extravagant\, taking traditional acoustic idioms and delivering with punk abandonment and virtuosic flare. A dynamic three piece offering a unique sound emerging from Celtic\, Gypsy Swing\, Roma and Flamenco and tuned in savvy. Wrapping pan European traditional acoustic music with infectious grooves\, epic\, pounding\, sing along\, punch the air anthems to intricately arranged instrumentals. Challenging the limitations of what people might expect acoustic instruments to sound like\, the use of bowed harmonics between fiddle and bass can be as menacing and eerie as it can be psychedelic and mesmerising. \n\n\n\nPercussion provided by the front man Langan\, whilst singing and driving the rhythm guitar\, he somehow co-ordinates the operating of a cajon and a tambourine with his feet – bringing the driving\, swinging groove of the rhythm guitar together with his foot percussion resulting in an impressively tight band sound with a tempo that is free to go anywhere. Langan\, flanked on one side by Caplin\, a Hebridean classically trained violinist who is as adept at long bowed orchestral harmony passages as he is with swashbuckling dazzlingly quick tune playing and improvising. On his other side there’s Tunstall on Double Bass\, sometimes utilising his sonorous bow technique in conjunction with Caplin to create eerie soundscapes\, but mostly he’s fiercely pounding out bass lines which lock in seamlessly to Langan’s foot operated percussion and fiery rhythmic guitar playing to produce irresistible high energy\, bouncy grooves\, with beautifully subtle harmonies and vocals.‘Astonishing work\, boundlessly inventive… driving rhythms and mesmerising folk melodies’ R2 Magazine  \n\n\n\nFlew The ArrowFlew The Arrow is an Alt/Folk artist from the West Coast of Scotland\, residing in Glasgow\, where he builds his reputation as an Acoustic Songwriter. Now accompanied by Ross Hull on Fiddle\, Caitlin MacKenzie on Flute\, and Sarah McWhinney on Cello \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis will be a standing gig. \n\n\n\nSome seats can be booked over the phone for anyone who can’t stand for the whole evening. \n\n\n\nAll Tickets £16.50

SUMMARY:Andrew & Gwen Adair : Colour & Surface
DESCRIPTION:A joint exhibition by husband and wife artists\, Andy and Gwen Adair. The exhibition will include ceramics and 2D work by Andy and paintings by Gwen. \n\n\n\n\n\nArtist’s Statement – ANDREW ADAIR \n\n\n\nI have been a practicing ceramic artist for over thirty years and have always tried to maintain a playful approach to clay\, allowing the material to be evident through torn edges\, cracks\, texture and surface\, enjoying the random\, organic quality this brings. I greatly admire potters such as Voulkos\, Pearson\, Maltby and Peascod (who I was privileged to be taught by at Glasgow School of Art) for their affinity with their medium and the real integrity their work has. \n\n\n\nMy work must have similar integrity at its core and the material itself must be clearly manifest in the finished pieces. I enjoy “the potness of the pot”; something to be handled and appreciated in a tactile sense\, not just through an aesthetic eye. I remain fascinated by the same themes\, the interplay between positive and negative space\, the layering and distressing of surface\, the unpredictable and the accidental. These are constants in my work. \n\n\n\nI use a subtle and limited palette using different clays as a base. This involves stretching\, layering and folding the clay\, then imprinting the surface; printmaking with clay and glaze instead of paper and ink. My ideas in terms of content are suggested by topical discussions\, news stories\, quotes\, the music playing while I work\, whatever catches my mind and eye. \n\n\n\nAs well as continuing to work with clay\, I have\, over the last few years\, diversified into 2D\, repurposing old metal shelves\, wooden pallets\, and anything with an interesting surface that can be modified and developed. Here I am still exploring many of the same themes as I do in clay\, but on a larger scale. Using spray paint\, stencils\, a blow torch and a lot of elbow grease I am attacking the surface in a much more direct and aggressive manner. Techniques used in my ceramics\, have themselves been repurposed and reused in the 2D works and then reworked back into 3D. The sense of play remains and continues to guide my process. The outcome is not gentle or pretty\, but hopefully quite challenging to the viewer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nArtist’s Statement – GWEN ADAIR \n\n\n\nMy work explores various themes\, but people often predominate in figure compositions and in portraits. I am fascinated by the way the disposition of figures can create a story in the mind of the viewer\, which possibly comes from my training as an illustrator at Glasgow School of Art. I am drawn to the idea of otherness\, as in folk and fairy tales\, or in performers adopting other personas and creating different worlds and alternative realities. \n\n\n\nBirds began to appear alongside the performers\, and have now become a subject in themselves\, as their colours\, shapes and textures are lovely to paint. There is also something knowing about birds. \n\n\n\nMy new-found love of landscape painting is allowing me to develop my language of  expressive and gestural mark-making. Generally my themes are quite traditional\, and I tend to work quickly in an “alla prima” fashion\, using oil paint with square brushes and a palette knife. Hopefully this gives a certain spontaneity to the work. I strongly believe that the paint should be part of the painting\, and that the marks themselves should add to the image.

SUMMARY:On Track & End of Line
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBITION CONTINUES UNTIL 8TH AUGUST \nThe exhibition has paintings by railway artists who create evocative images of the railways of the past and these are combined with the unseen photographs by the late Trevor Grimshaw. \nTrevor photographed the rusting and abandoned trains\, at the time when all steam trains were retired from service. Many of the trains were taken to be scrapped at Barry Island in Wales and it was here that Trevor found his inspiration for a nostalgic series of images. \nThe paintings in the exhibition are by  local railway painter\, Stephen Warnes\, who lives in Brampton\, as well as works by railway artists\, Stephen Bainbridge and John Harrison. \nMost of the works in the show are for sale\, including some cards and prints.  We can order prints from the photographic exhibition online via a dedicated website. \nThis exhibition is a must for railway enthusiasts and photographers as well as those who are interested in the nostalgic past of steam and diesel engines. \n\nStephen Bainbridge – Smokey BraeStephen Bainbridge – Citadel Princess 1937Trevor GrimshawTrevor GrimshawStephen Warnes – Crossing theTweedStephen Warnes – Crossing the RibbleJohn Harrison – Crewe in L.M.S. SUMMARY:Rob Heron & Tom Cronin - support from Melanie Baker Duo
DESCRIPTION:Upfront Arts Venue is looking forward to kicking off our 2021 music program with a bang.\n\n\n\nWe welcome back one of our favourite acts Rob Heron with his new duo for an intimate socially distanced seated performance. \n\n\n\nRob Heron and Tom Cronin don’t care what genre you choose to put them in – western swing\, blues\, country\, rock & roll or whatever else – as long as you understand that they’re 100% sincere and 100% immersed in this stuff. The Tea Pad sound draws on myriad influences – from Hank Williams to Django Reinhardt\, Tom Waits to The Beatles – yet ultimately sounds like nobody else\, that North Eastern Swing style that’s utterly their own and changing all the time. \n\n\n\nFor the opening set we have Indie – Folk – Singer Songwriter Melanie Baker from Cumbria performing as a duo with Josh Mark Jackson on backing vocals and percussion. \n\n\n\nThis will be a great event. SUMMARY:Puss in Boots
DESCRIPTION:The Upfront Puppet Theatre Christmas production is “Puss in Boots”. The show is based on the original French fairy tale. The father of the family dies and the oldest son inherits the flour mill; the second a donkey and the youngest son\, Marco\, inherits a cat! BUT this is no ordinary cat. Puss has magical qualities that enable him to talk and stand on two legs. His schemes and adventures create a happy ending with Marco becoming a Prince and marrying the Princess. \n\n\n\nThe show uses long string marionettes performed from two puppeteer bridges in the roof of the theatre\, specially composed music\, puppets and scenery constructed in the Upfront workshops. \n\n\n\nThe show is in two halves with an interval in the middle and an after show “meet the puppets & puppeteers\, ask questions\, take photos” following the 2:30 & 3:30 performances. \n\n\n\nPuss in Boots Gallery\n\n\nPuss in BootsPuss in the StreetPuss and WorkmenPuss with the King and MarcoI can do anything\, I can grow really bigI think I heard a wolfOutside the millPuss talks to the ogre at homeThere is a cat outside wearing boots your highnessSo you are just going to have to leave

SUMMARY:COAST TO MOUNTAINS
DESCRIPTION:PAINTINGS by PHILIPPA HEADLEY\n\n\n\n29th September – 13th December \n\n\n\nI have spent many years hiking in the Lakeland Fells and walking along the Jurassic Coast. Whether I’m viewing a precipitous cliff top from the sea or gazing at a fell yet to be climbed I find wonderful opportunities to paint. This everchanging environment\, eroded by weather over centuries or changed daily by the tides\, evokes many emotions. \n\n\n\nThis series of paintings\, of places where the worlds of coast and mountains intertwine\, is my expression of the persistent pull I feel to be part of the landscape\, to play at the water’s edge\, walk through the mountains or simply take a quiet moment with my sketchbook and capture images of these interactions to convey ways we react to nature. \n\n\nThrow Me A StickAfternoon LightDeep In ConversationA Quiet Moment

SUMMARY:Kirsty McGee & Ben Bedford In Concert
DESCRIPTION:Kirsty is making a very welcome return. She was one of the first musicians to ever play at Upfront and she has returned several times. This occasion will be part of her 2019 Tour with fellow singer songwriter Ben Bedford\, from America. “A couple of years ago\, at 3 in the morning\, two songwriters collided in a seventh floor corridor at the Crown Westin Hotel\, Kansas City Missouri. One was noticeable for his large beard and the other was a woman carrying a saw. This year\, for the first time and for a limited run of shows\, these two artists Kirsty McGee (UK) and Ben Bedford (US) will be touring and collaborating together.”. Kisty’s 8th album will also be released in October. You can expect an intimate & memorable live show with tales from both sides of the Atlantic\, soft voices & delicate guitar work. The two songwriters will work together onstage weaving voices\, guitars\, bass flute & musical saw. \n\n\n\nKirsty McGee – “Haunting\, stimulating but always genre-defying…a level of lyrical insight and timeless imagery that belies its 21st century creation…A film-noir album of blues\, jazz\, folk and retro shuffles. Classy.” **** R2Ben Bedford – 2018 Kerrville New Folk Winner “Certainly one of the best young singer songwriters working today.” Rob Adams\, The Herald\, Scotland.Watch & listen to the tour video https://youtu.be/IzsESnb1S6QListen to one of the songs on Kirsty’s new album https://youtu.be/vyhIVPKOpgs \n\n\n\nKIRSTY & BEN WILL BE TAKING A FREE SONGWRITING WORKSHOP 5PM – 6PM.
