SUMMARY:Summer Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:We welcome three new artists to Upfront as part of our 2023 Summer Exhibition.Sheena McCurrach\, from Galloway who has become known for her use of vibrant colour and texture\, particularly those found in our winter landscape\, and also for her distinctive and sympathetic approach to portraying birds\, trees and other animals.Mavis Atkinson Smith\, from Dumfries who draws inspiration from landscape\, gardens\, flowers\, dance and the written word.  Her sketch book is at the core of her approach and she works in a variety of different media.Bob Henfrey\, from Kendal who works en plein air in sketchbooks. His paintings use a variety of medium. and he has recently co-authored a book on the experiences of being a painter-artist.Our fourth artist is Haydn Morris who has been a regular exhibitor at Upfront over the years.  .He draws inspiration from the spectacular Lake District landscape to paint impressionistic oils and watercolours. Our foyer gallery includes work by our regular 2023 artists\, Mark A Pearce\, Mary Ann Rogers\, Geoffrey Smith and ceramics by Syl Macro\, Chris Cox\, Dorit Deutsch & Brian Goodall.

SUMMARY:New Work by Jamie Oldham
DESCRIPTION:Jamie grew up in Cumbria and after living near Bath and exhibiting regularly in many London galleries he decided in 2022 to return to Cumbria and live near the Solway coast.He loves the work of the landscapists Fred Cumming and Kurt Jackson\, but his greatest influence (and greatest teacher) has been his late father\, Tom. Upfront had the pleasure of holding a memorable exhibition many years ago which included Jamie\, his father Tom Oldham and David William Morris.Jamie enjoys working in several genres – landscape\, still life and bird portraits – with multiple media including acrylics\, oils and cold wax. \n\n\n\nThe work in this exhibition is en plein air or studio work of West Cumbria\, the North Lakes and the Solway coast area.

SUMMARY:"Solway Series" - Photographs by David Moyes
DESCRIPTION:6th – 24th September  \n\n\n\nThe 20 images in the exhibition\, each one mounted and framed\, show the moods and movementof the Solway’s waters\, particularly around the beaches of Dumfries and Galloway.“I think the photographs reveal aspects of Solway beaches that are less often noticed\,” says David.“Some feature the same location but in different weather or tidal conditions and each imagecreates a different atmosphere from this beautiful coastline.”All David’s photographs are available for sale at £75 each with the money raised going to supporta local charity\, Suicide Bereavement Support (SBS) for Cumbria and the surrounding areas.David would like to thank the key sponsors for the exhibition: Penrith Rotary Club and The Lions Club Penrith. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFriday 15th September 7pm – 8:30pm“Finding Peace within a Troubled World – A Buddhist Approach”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Talk by Dave Stones. He will be leading 2 short mediations as part of the event and there will be the opportunity to chat afterwards for those that wish to with a cuppa & some cake.This is a free event\, designed to create the opportunity for those that might wish to take part in mediation\, perhaps for the first time & learn something more about the Buddhist approach. \n\n\n\nThe event is in support of the Suicide Bereavement Society and the current exhibition that we are running at Upfront gallery as a fund raiser for the Charity. Any donations for SBS will be greatly received on the evening.
