SUMMARY: Ahmed Dickinson Cárdenas and Eduardo Martín (Classical Guitar Concert)
DESCRIPTION:This April\, The Bridge returns to the beautiful Upfront Gallery with a powerful new chapter in their story. \n\n\n\nAfter their electrifying debut\, Ahmed Dickinson Cárdenas and Eduardo Martín reunite to present music from their second album\, The Bridge II: En otra dimensión — a vibrant\, soulful and deeply human conversation between two of Cuba’s most distinctive guitar voices. \n\n\n\nRooted in an innate Caribbean sense of rhythm\, their performances transform the guitar into a complete orchestra. Classical lyricism and rock energy flow seamlessly into son montunos\, Yoruba-inspired chants\, feel-good rumbas\, funk-infused boleros and cinematic soundscapes\, where Cuban tumbaos and percussive slap-bass effects create a rich and intoxicating tapestry of sound. \n\n\n\nTwo virtuosos. Two generations. One unforgettable musical journey. \n\n\n\nJoin us this April in Penrith for an evening that promises fire and intimacy\, brilliance and depth — and experience the next dimension of The Bridge live. \n\n\n\nPre concert supper can be booked from 5:30pm onwards \n\n\n\nBuy tickets here http://www.ticketsource.co.uk/upfrontartslimited

SUMMARY:The Breath
DESCRIPTION:The Breath is Manchester-based guitarist Stuart McCallum and singer/flautist Ríoghnach Connolly. They met on the city’s gig circuit in the late noughties. An unlikely pairing though it was\, he an acclaimed guitar whiz\, ex long-time member of The Cinematic Orchestra and a softly spoken Manchester urbanite\, she a folk singer with a larger-than-life personality and a powerful voice to match. Their connection was immediate; they formed The Breath in 2016\, a singer-songwriter duo to present their contemporary take on alt-folk. \n\n\n\nFor them\, it’s all about the song. Connolly is a storyteller and their exquisitely crafted\, honest\, personal\, heartfelt songs are as likely to touch on childhood summers and first love as cultural dislocation\, post- colonial injustices and grief. But it’s Ríoghnach’s impassioned delivery and extraordinary stop-you-in- your-tracks voice\, coupled with Stuart’s understated brilliance that is so engaging. \n\n\n\nThe Breath have released three albums on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label. Their breakthrough album\, ‘Carry Your Kin’ (2016) delved deeply into the spaces between rock\, ambient and Irish folk\, where layered vocals\, mesmerising guitar riffs and expansive folk arrangements created a big sound. ‘Let the Cards Fall’ followed in 2018\, and\, like the first\, was recorded with a full band granting a multi-textured kaleidoscope of sound with a cinematic sensibility. References to Celtic history and cultural loss are woven into a bewitching collection of songs that span beguiling ballads and punch-the-air anthems. In support of the release\, Stuart and Ríoghnach performed a series of shows – just the two of them. Stripped bare\, they found a new depth and beauty in their songs allowing their extraordinary connection to shine through. \n\n\n\nThe duo returned to the studio in 2019 to record ‘Only Stories (Let the Cards Fall Revisited)’ reimagining previous work (alongside two new songs) taking it back to its acoustic roots. This new direction would see Ríoghnach Connolly receive an RTÉ Folk Award nomination for Best Folk Singer and win Folk Singer Of The Year at the 2019 BBC R2 Folk Awards for which the duo were also nominated as Best Duo/Group. \n\n\n\nDuring the pandemic of 2020/2021\, The Breath returned to the studio to record a set of songs in remembrance of American lost folk icon\, Karen Dalton. In the spring of 2021\, they released a two-track single\, ‘Something On Your Mind’ and original song\, ‘Remembering Mountains’. They release their third studio album on Real World Records in 2023. \n\n\n\nThe Breath in Autumn 2023 build to their new album\, ‘Land Of My Other’. Ten original tracks of raw\, gorgeous\, acoustic-minded music. Songs that tell stories in ways that soothe\, stir\, exalt\, and touch emotional chords that will bring tears of lamenting joy\, to your eyes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS HERE https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/upfrontartslimited/t-pqpvxoa

SUMMARY:Nancy's Orange + The Butterfly Collector
DESCRIPTION:IN THIS UNIQUE double-bill\, two actor-writers—GRACE KIRKBY & PETER MACQUEEN perform their own one-person shows\, each directed by the other. Grace Kirby as a put-upon but compassionate NHS delivery driver\, carrying meds to a cast of memorable characters (all played by Grace)\, along the the Cumbrian stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and Peter Macqueen as a butterfly lover marooned on a tower of furniture in his flooded house\, waiting—and hoping—for the waters to recede… \n\n\n\nWorking with acclaimed sound designer/composers Mark Melville and José Guillermo Puello and set designer Martin Johns\, they have created two intensely realised worlds out of nothing but words\, a few props\, simple sets and soundscapes of quietly dramatic beauty.Rehearsals for their 2025 tour were here at Upfront and this performance will be the final performance of the tour. SUMMARY:Kris Drever & Chris Stout
DESCRIPTION:Kris Drever and Chris Stout are icons of the Scottish roots culture and two of the most powerful contemporary voices to sing out of it in the last quarter century. \n\n\n\nBoth come from the Northern Isles (Kris from Orkney and Chris from Shetland) and represent the strength of those identities in the music they inhabit. Inherited through childhood\, family and osmosis\, you can hear the wind whistling through the strings\, the rhythms washing against your animal self and the old stories whispering out from the ingleneuk. \n\n\n\nIn Glasgow in 2019 the two found themselves to be neighbours in the West End and began meeting up and playing music together. Both musicians found a sound of great interest and emotional power in these little get-togethers\, and it soon became a more regular happening. \n\n\n\nNow they’ve decided to share the experience with a wider audience. Come and hear songs and tunes you know and some you don’t\, shining through the unique prism of these two ‘one of a kind’ musicians. \n\n\n\nKris is a guitarist\, singer and founder member of the trio Lau. He’s a multi award winning singer songwriter and has played and written with a galaxy of stars (Eddi Reader\, Roddy Woomble\, Mark Knopfler\, Kate Rusby\, Jack Bruce\, Karine Polwart…). \n\n\n\nChris is a virtuoso violinist\, viola player and composer\, founder member of the legendary Shetland band ‘Fiddlers Bid’ and long-time collaborator of the genius harpist Catriona McKay. He has performed in venues as storied as the Sydney Opera House and has composed for and performed with The Royal Scottish National Orchestra\, The Russian Philharmonic Orchestra\, The Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and a great many more. \n\n\n\nPre concert supper available from 5:30pm (Booking essential)Tel: 01768484538 to book \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy tickets here https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/upfrontartslimited/t-eaddjln

SUMMARY:The Madalitso Band (Malawi)
DESCRIPTION:‘Madalitso band are a two man musical army from Malawi. Described as ‘Uplifting and Vibrant’ by the BBC\, they get crowds beaming with wonder and on their feet dancing every time. Their first album was produced by Bongo Joe records and the band has already performed at Womex 2020\, Womad 2019\, Roskilde 2018\, Sauti Za Busara 2017…to name just a few. They were discovered busking outside a shopping centre in 2009. Their vibrant playing\, strong vocals and traditional style caught the attention of Emanuel Kamwenje who recorded their first album the same year. The band plays the babatone – a home-made instrument popular in Malawi – and the four-string guitar\, creating the traditional Malawi ‘banjo’ sound. When not playing or touring\, babatone player Yobu Malinga works as a gardener and guitarist Yosefe Kalekeni works as a security guard\, however around Malawi they are increasingly revered as musical prophets.’ \n\n\n\nPre concert supper from 6pm (Booking Essential)Phone 01768484538 \n\n\n\nTickets £15Choose your seats and book onlinehttps://www.ticketsource.co.uk/upfrontartslimited/t-movgaoWe are using the balcony seating and half of the seating rake\, so that there is space at the front for anyone wanting to dance.

SUMMARY:Tony McManus & Julia Toaspern
DESCRIPTION:This concert has moved to the new date of 30th June as Upfront totally flooded\, due to the extreme weather conditions on 22nd May. We have been working non stop to keep the business open with as little disruption as possible. Please support us and the musicians who very kindly changed their schedule. We have a Flood Appeal Fund to help us get through this difficult time. If you are unable to come to the concert\, but would like to offer a little support\, it would be very appreciated. https://www.gofundme.com/f/upfront-arts-venue-flood-relief-support \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“Tony’s music is beyond beautiful\, it’s perfect” – Tommy Emmanuel. \n\n\n\n“Julia’s bell-like voice and her fiddle playing are thrilling. She moves effortlessly from fiddle to guitar\, her solo is impressive.” – Salon Festival\, France. \n\n\n\nHailed by the late John Renbourn as ‘the best Celtic guitarist in the world’\, Tony McManus has been listed as one of 50 transcendental guitarists of all time by Guitar Player Magazine. \n\n\n\nJulia Toaspern\, from Berlin\, combines classical violin and voice training with an interest in jazz\, baroque and traditional music. She has released two albums of original songs and performed both as a classical player and as a singer/songwriter on both sides of the Atlantic. Her skills as a guitarist are prodigious and make a very exciting fit with Tony’s work. \n\n\n\nThe duo’s guitar treatments of traditional music is unique exploring the harmonic possibilities of these old\, and sometimes not so old\, tunes. Flat-picking or finger-picking at the highest level they are always at the service of the music rather than simply displaying technical prowess – although that is very evident as well. Julia’s violin effortlessly morphs into a fiddle as she weaves from Italian madrigal to Scottish reel. Julia’s songs go to the heart of love and loss\, hope and survival and are infused with a musical input from wide and eclectic experience of musical life.Pre concert supper can be booked from 6pm onwards – (booking essential Tel: 01768484538) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS HERE – http://www.ticketsource.co.uk/upfrontartslimited

SUMMARY:Hedera (Quintet)
DESCRIPTION:Hedera is a new Bristol-based quintet of instrumentalists brought together by a desire to lean into the slower and more delicate side of European folk traditions. \n\n\n\nTheir growing repertoire draws on French\, English\, Eastern European and Scandinavian music\, with playful and inventive arrangements that reflect the diverse array of experience brought by members of the band: violinists Maisie Brett and Lulu Ruby Rose\, clarinettist Isis Wolf-Light\, Beth Roberts on double bass\, and Tamsin Elliott on accordion and harp. Intrigued by the combination of strings and reeds that seems to lend itself to effortless arranging\, they have also now begun to create original music together. Their debut release ‘Waterwheel’ was composed by Tamsin Elliott and filmed by Elly Lucas in a dramatic Perthshire arboretum; it premiered on Folk Radio in October 2022.  \n\n\n\nThe project began life as a group of friends playing folk tunes around winter bonfires\, grateful to have a collective musical outlet while their regular projects (Solana\, Opa Rosa\, Hands of the Heron) were unable to perform due to the pandemic. They discovered a shared love of listening deeply\, playing slowly\, and finding new ways to support each other musically. Over time\, the ensemble has evolved into something more structured\, but still retains the intimacy and gentle conviviality of its beginnings. Their debut performance took place at Fire in the Mountain festival in June 2022\, and in December 2022\, they sold out their first ever hometown gig at The Greenbank\, with such a demand for tickets that they seriously contemplated adding a second date. Their scheduled performances for 2024 include King’s Place (London)\, Ashburton Arts Centre and Black Fen Folk Club (Cambridge). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS HERE www.ticketsource.co.uk/upfrontartslimited
